Assam Declares 22–23 September as Dry Days to Honour Zubeen Garg

39

The Assam government has announced that 22 and 23 September will be observed as dry days across the state in memory of celebrated singer and actor Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on 19 September.

The decision comes as the state extended its official mourning period until 23 September. According to a notification issued by the Excise Department, all liquor outlets—including IMFL and beer shops, country spirit vendors, bars, clubs, wholesale warehouses and other licensed establishments—will remain closed on these two days.

The order also makes it clear that no sale or serving of alcohol will be permitted during the mourning period. The notification, signed by the Secretary of the Excise Department, has been circulated to all deputy commissioners, excise officers, autonomous councils and other authorities to ensure strict enforcement.

The state has been in mourning since Garg’s demise. Widely regarded as one of the most influential cultural icons of Assam and the Northeast, he was not only a singer but also a lyricist, actor and filmmaker whose legacy continues to inspire millions.
