Amit Shah becomes longest-serving Home Minister

Amit Shah on Tuesday became the longest-serving Union Home Minister in India’s history, marking a significant milestone in his political career.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on this achievement during the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, praising his leadership and highlighting several key developments that took place under his tenure.

PM Modi told NDA leaders that the BJP government had implemented the Constitution in its truest sense and worked to fulfil Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision for the nation.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya took to social media to share details of Shah’s record-breaking stint.

“Shri Amit Shah becomes the longest-serving Union Home Minister in India’s history. With 2,258 days in office, he has now surpassed Shri Lal Krishna Advani’s tenure of 2,256 days as Home Minister,” Malviya posted on X.

The milestone was achieved on August 5 – the same day the country is observing the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, a move that revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and fully integrated it with the Indian Union.

This development also comes shortly after PM Modi became the longest-serving Prime Minister of India, surpassing the tenure of former PM Indira Gandhi.

Before Shah and Advani, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel – India’s first Home Minister – held the record with 1,218 days in office.

Amit Shah’s tenure as Home Minister has been marked by several bold decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370, a sustained crackdown on terrorism, and efforts to bolster internal security.

He has also pledged to eliminate Maoism from the country by March 2026.
