Kerala-Born Nithya Raman Makes History, Set to Become Los Angeles’ First Asian-American Mayor

12

Indian-origin politician Nithya Raman has scripted history in the United States after winning the Los Angeles mayoral election, defeating incumbent mayor Karen Bass. Born in Kerala, Raman’s victory marks a significant moment for the Indian-origin community and reflects the growing presence of South Asian leaders in American politics.

According to projections by Decision Desk HQ, Raman secured 51.1 per cent of the votes, while Bass received 48.33 per cent. With this victory, Raman is set to become the first Asian-American mayor of Los Angeles and only the second woman to hold the city’s top elected position.

Raman’s victory comes after an unexpected entry into the mayoral race. She had initially supported Bass’s re-election campaign but decided to challenge the incumbent just weeks before the election. Despite entering the contest relatively late, she managed to build considerable support among voters through a campaign focused on local governance and public concerns.

Several issues surrounding the outgoing administration played a significant role in shaping the election. The devastating Palisades wildfire, the persistent homelessness crisis, declining employment opportunities in Hollywood and concerns over essential civic services had drawn criticism during Bass’s tenure. Public dissatisfaction over these issues provided Raman with an opportunity to strengthen her campaign and gain electoral support.

Born on July 28, 1981, in Kerala, India, Nithya Raman belongs to a Tamil Iyer family. She moved to the United States with her family at the age of six. The family initially settled in Louisiana before relocating to Massachusetts.

Raman pursued her higher education at Harvard University, where she earned a degree in Social Studies. She subsequently completed a master’s degree in Urban Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Before entering electoral politics, Raman worked in the fields of urban development and homelessness, focusing on challenges related to city planning and public welfare. Her professional experience in these areas later became an important part of her political career.

Her electoral victory adds another prominent Indian-origin name to the list of politicians holding key public offices across the United States. She joins leaders such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, Edison Mayor Sam Joshi and Richmond Mayor Danny Avula, who also have Indian or broader South Asian roots.

Raman’s rise to the leadership of Los Angeles marks another notable milestone in the representation of Indian-origin communities in American public life.
