At just 17, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi is steadily establishing herself as one of the most promising young talents in Indian women’s tennis. Her impressive run at the Chennai Open, where she reached the quarterfinals, has brought her into the spotlight and ended India’s 14-year wait for a quarterfinal appearance in a WTA Tour-level singles event.
Maaya became the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach the last eight of a WTA singles tournament. Ranked 669th in the world, she produced an impressive performance to defeat Poland’s Weronika Falkowska, ranked 277th, 6-4, 6-3.
Born on June 12, 2009, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya began playing tennis at the age of eight. She started taking the sport more seriously at the age of ten and gradually moved towards professional tennis. Her talent came into prominence after she won a national under-12 tennis title in 2022.
Her achievements at the junior level have also been impressive. Maaya has won nine junior titles and secured notable victories in international tournaments. In 2025, she won the J300 title in Delhi, followed by successes at tournaments in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France, and Bamberg, Germany, in 2026. She has also broken into the top 20 of the junior world rankings.
October 2026 marked another major milestone in her career when she clinched her maiden professional singles title at the W35 tournament in Lagos, Portugal. Starting from the qualifying rounds, Maaya went on to win the tournament without dropping a single set. She defeated Spain’s Celia Cervino Ruiz 6-4, 6-2 in the final. She also secured the doubles title alongside Ukraine’s Yelyzaveta Kotliar.
Her training journey has also taken an international turn. After previously training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain, Maaya recently shifted her training base to the Elite Tennis Center in southern France.
At just 17, Maaya’s achievements have made her one of the most exciting prospects in Indian women’s tennis. Having successfully transitioned from junior competitions to the professional circuit, she will now look to build on her recent breakthrough and establish herself among the leading players on the WTA Tour.
