The post-mortem examination of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the sensational Hotel Bilas Inn murder case, is scheduled to be conducted at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh today. His body is currently kept at the AMCH mortuary after being shifted from Jaysagar Hospital on Wednesday.
All necessary arrangements for the post-mortem examination have been completed. The examination will be conducted by the Department of Forensic Medicine at AMCH. The procedure could not be carried out on Wednesday as the scheduled time had elapsed. The body will be handed over to his family members following the post-mortem.
Gogoi died in a police encounter at Phulpanisiga in Sivasagar in the early hours of Wednesday. According to the police, he allegedly attempted to escape from police custody while being taken in connection with a separate cheating case. Police opened fire during the incident, resulting in his death. TSI Debashish Sharma was also injured in the encounter.
The encounter has raised several questions, particularly over the circumstances leading to the police firing. Despite a petition being filed before the court, Gogoi’s death has added another dimension to the already controversial case.
Gogoi had been at the centre of widespread public attention following the brutal Hotel Bilas Inn killings, in which five members of an affluent Bharali family from Barpeta lost their lives. He was identified as the prime accused in the case.
With Gogoi’s death, questions surrounding the motive behind the killings and the alleged conspiracy may become more difficult to answer. The circumstances of the encounter and the investigation into the five deaths are now likely to remain under close public scrutiny.
