Who Has Links with Foreign Powers? BJP and Congress Challenge Each Other to an Open Debate

12

The political atmosphere in India has once again heated up, with the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress engaging in a war of words over allegations of “vote theft”. From the demand for a special session of Parliament to the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and delimitation of constituencies, both parties have been trading accusations. Amid this political confrontation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate over alleged links with foreign powers.

The Congress responded after Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the government was ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the issue of “vote theft” if the opposition demanded it.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that if the government was genuinely serious about holding a special session on the issue, it should first ensure the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He also demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be put on hold.

Jairam Ramesh further stressed that the new proposals regarding delimitation of constituencies should have been shared with the opposition parties well in advance. He also questioned why the Home Minister was reluctant to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the proposals in detail.

The Congress leader also criticised the central government over the fact that 82 days had passed since the Monsoon Session of Parliament was adjourned sine die, yet it had not been formally prorogued.

Ramesh alleged that the government was seeking to use its two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha to push through bills related to delimitation. Claiming that the actual contents of these proposed bills had not yet been made public, he alleged that the move was aimed at protecting the BJP from a possible electoral defeat in 2029.

The BJP, too, hit back at the Congress over its allegations. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra took to social media and accused the opposition alliance of sowing seeds of lies and hatred for political gains.

Another BJP spokesperson, Gaurav Bhatia, said that India’s democratic government, which has maintained political stability for the past 12 years, is one of the country’s greatest strengths. He, however, accused the opposition of having an anarchist mindset and attempting to bring about a change in the government through what he described as an insurrection.

Meanwhile, the political confrontation took a fresh turn over allegations of foreign interference. Since the initial planning of the opposition rally at Ramlila Maidan, the BJP has been alleging that foreign forces are backing a conspiracy by the opposition to topple the government.

In response, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged on Monday through social media that Narendra Modi would never have become Prime Minister without the assistance of foreign powers. In this context, Rahul also challenged Prime Minister Modi to participate in an open debate.

On Tuesday, reiterating his earlier challenge, Rahul Gandhi said that the Prime Minister frequently labels opposition leaders as “traitors”. He argued that an open debate should be held to establish who actually has links with foreign powers and what the nature of those connections is.

Rahul Gandhi challenged the Prime Minister, saying, “Choose any platform or venue. Come and debate with me. Who are the real traitors? Who has links with foreign powers, and what is the nature of those connections? We can sit face-to-face in the presence of the media and the country’s youth. You can choose anyone you want as the judge. For instance, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat could also be the judge.”

Rahul also said that India’s economic framework and the agreement with the United States should be part of the discussion. He raised questions about how the agreement was finalised, why it was rushed, why only the Prime Minister was involved in the matter and why the Cabinet was not informed.

He further called for an open discussion on the Adani issue and the Epstein controversy. Challenging the Prime Minister, Rahul said, “Do not be afraid. Let the truth come out.”

Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took a dig at the Congress leader. He said that high-level debates are possible only between mature individuals. He also compared the act of pursuing what he described as an anti-India agenda and then blaming others to Islamic separatists speaking about secularism.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Smriti Irani also criticised Rahul Gandhi during her visit to Kolkata. She alleged that Mani Shankar Aiyar had travelled to Pakistan and sought support to remove the Modi government from power. Similarly, she accused Rahul Gandhi of visiting London and urging people there to unite to remove Modi from power.

Questioning the Congress leadership, Smriti Irani asked how they could point fingers at others under such circumstances.

Overall, the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress has intensified over allegations of “vote theft”, electoral reforms, the SIR process, delimitation of constituencies and alleged foreign interference. It remains to be seen how Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the top BJP leadership respond to Rahul Gandhi’s challenge for an open debate.
