A suspected food poisoning incident has triggered concern in Singra-Barkhat village under Kamalpur, near Baihata Chariali in Assam’s Kamrup district, after more than a hundred people reportedly fell ill following the consumption of bog (religious offerings) distributed during a Mansa Puja celebration.

According to reports, several men and women began experiencing symptoms shortly after consuming the religious offerings. The affected individuals reportedly suffered from vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and fever. As the number of people falling ill continued to rise, panic spread across the locality.

Following the incident, the affected individuals were rushed to the Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital in Kamalpur, where they were admitted for medical treatment. Meanwhile, several patients requiring advanced medical attention have reportedly been referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati.

The situation remains a matter of concern, with reports suggesting that the number of affected people is continuing to increase. The incident has raised serious questions about the preparation, storage and distribution of the food offerings served during the religious event.

Although food poisoning is suspected to be the cause, the exact reason behind the sudden illness has not yet been officially established. Authorities will need to examine the food items, ingredients and water used during the preparation of the offerings to determine the source of contamination.

Local residents have urged the health department and district administration to take immediate steps to ensure proper medical care for all affected individuals and investigate the incident.
