18 Years On, Assam Remembers the Horror of October 30 Blasts

24

Eighteen years after one of the darkest days in Assam’s history, the state remembers the victims of the devastating serial bomb blasts that killed 88 people and injured more than 500 on October 30, 2008.

The coordinated explosions ripped through Guwahati, Barpeta Road, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar, leaving behind a trail of destruction, grief and unanswered questions. The attacks remain among the deadliest bombing incidents in India’s history.

In Guwahati, explosions struck the busy areas of Pan Bazar, Fancy Bazar and Ganeshguri, which were crowded with shoppers, office-goers and ordinary residents. The blasts turned bustling public spaces into scenes of chaos, with emergency services rushing to rescue the injured and transport victims to hospitals.

Kokrajhar was also severely affected, with three confirmed blasts reported in the town, along with reports of another possible grenade explosion. Bongaigaon witnessed one blast, while two explosions struck Barpeta Road.

According to reports, 41 people lost their lives in Guwahati, 21 in Kokrajhar and 15 in Barpeta Road. Several injured victims later succumbed to their injuries, further increasing the death toll. More than 500 people were injured in the attacks.

In the immediate aftermath, police officials suspected that powerful explosives, including RDX or other plastic explosives, might have been used, given the intensity of the explosions and the fires that followed.

Eighteen years later, October 30 remains a painful reminder of the lives lost and the families forever changed by the tragedy. As Assam remembers the victims, the day stands as a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives and a reminder of the devastating human cost of terrorism.
