India thanks China for smooth return of Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims amid Nepal unrest

India on Thursday expressed gratitude to Chinese authorities for their prompt assistance in ensuring a safe and smooth journey for pilgrims returning from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, following disruptions caused by unrest in Nepal.

The Indian Embassy in Beijing said that border crossings for pilgrims transiting through the Tibet Autonomous Region are now operational, allowing their safe return via Nepal.

In a post on X, the Embassy stated: “It is learnt that the border crossings are now operational and Indian pilgrims undertaking Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are able to return to India via Nepal in a safe and smooth manner. We thank the local authorities in the Tibet Autonomous Region and China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their prompt assistance. Our helpline numbers continue to be operational.”

The update followed an advisory issued on Wednesday, which urged stranded citizens to remain in touch with the Embassy and exercise due caution given the volatile situation in Nepal.

The advisory noted that the unrest had impacted the travel arrangements of Indian pilgrims travelling via Nepal on tours organised by private operators. It also reminded citizens of the risks posed by the high altitude and challenging terrain, advising them to take necessary precautions for health and safety.

The Embassy further urged travellers to follow instructions from both local authorities and Indian missions in Beijing and Kathmandu, and to reach out through designated helpline numbers for assistance.

The advisories came against the backdrop of escalating violence in Nepal, where the death toll from the September 8 protest led by Gen-Z reached 30, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.
