Three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and 16 others injured after a CRPF vehicle overturned near Kandva in the Basantgarh area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Thursday morning.
The tragic incident occurred around 10:30 am in the Kadwa area while the personnel were returning from an operation in Basantgarh. A total of 23 jawans from the 187 Battalion were on board the bunker vehicle when it lost control and plunged into a gorge.
According to Additional SP Udhampur, Sandeep Bhat, police teams quickly rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The injured were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
While two CRPF personnel died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Udhampur MP, Dr. Jitendra Singh, termed the news “disturbing” and confirmed that he had spoken to Deputy Commissioner Saloni Rai, who is personally monitoring the situation. “Rescue measures have been initiated immediately. Locals have voluntarily come forward to assist. All possible help is being ensured,” he posted on X.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed his condolences. “Saddened by the loss of CRPF personnel due to an accident near Udhampur. We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation,” he wrote on X, wishing the injured a speedy recovery and assuring that top officials have been directed to provide the best possible care and assistance.
