Russian Airstrike on Ukraine Aid Distribution Centre Kills at Least 40, 59 Feared Trapped Under Rubble

At least 40 people have reportedly been killed in a devastating Russian airstrike targeting an aid distribution center in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. As many as 59 people are feared trapped or missing beneath the rubble, raising concerns over the possibility of a higher death toll.

Although the attack reportedly took place on Monday, details of the incident have emerged recently.

Located close to the battlefield, a bunker beneath a school in Komyshuvakha had been serving as both a shelter for local residents and a distribution point for humanitarian assistance. The facility was reportedly struck while aid was being distributed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the first bomb was dropped when local residents had gathered to collect humanitarian supplies. He further alleged that a second strike followed the initial attack, worsening the situation.

According to Ivan Fedorov, deputy head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defence Council, 59 people remain unaccounted for following the incident.

On Monday, international humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen was distributing relief supplies in the area. The attack also claimed the lives of four police officers and two rescue workers.

Emergency response teams are currently working to clear the debris and recover bodies, while efforts continue to locate those who may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Footage recorded by the body camera of a police officer killed in the attack has revealed the terrifying moments leading up to the explosion.

The video reportedly shows civilians rushing into the bunker after receiving an air raid warning. However, a massive explosion suddenly rocked the area, following which the camera screen went completely dark.

Ukraine’s police have claimed that Russia used a three-tonne FAB glide bomb carrying approximately 1.4 tonnes of explosives in the attack.

However, Russia’s Defiance Ministry has rejected allegations that civilians were deliberately targeted. Moscow claimed that its forces had struck a military facility and that 25 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the operation.

The latest incident comes just a day after the conclusion of a six-day ceasefire aimed at facilitating the evacuation of at least 800 civilians from the town of Oleshky. The temporary truce was reportedly arranged through the mediation of US First Lady Melania Trump.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war are also continuing. The United States has proposed holding peace talks involving Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11.

US envoy Steve Witkoff said preparations were underway for discussions focused on ending the conflict and addressing future security arrangements.

However, the reported strike on the humanitarian aid center has raised fresh concerns over civilian safety and the prospects of peace, coming just ahead of the proposed diplomatic negotiations.
