The trial in the death case of late singer Zubeen Garg continues before the fast-track court, with the court scheduled to record the testimony of Singapore-based Assamese Rupkamal Kalita today.

Kalita was among those present on the yacht with Zubeen Garg on September 19, the day of the incident. He had earlier appeared before the investigating agency and recorded his statement during the investigation.

With Kalita, eight Singapore-based Assamese witnesses will have testified before the fast-track court. Earlier, Parikshit Sharma, Sushmita Goswami, Debajyoti Hazarika, Geo Langchat Narzary, Pratim Lahkar, Abhimanyu Talukdar and Tanmay Phukan had recorded their statements.

The Assamese expatriates who were present on the yacht on September 19 are considered important witnesses in the investigation. Kalita was reportedly the first among the expatriate Assamese witnesses to return to Assam and appear before the CID/SIT to record his statement.

While the testimonies of the witnesses are expected to shed light on the events of September 19, details of their statements have not been made public in full. As the case is currently under trial, the witnesses have also refrained from discussing the details of the incident with the media.

After appearing before the court, Parikshit Sharma had urged people to maintain faith in the judicial process. He had also said that other people who were present on the yacht would appear before the court and that the facts surrounding the incident would emerge in due course.

Kalita’s testimony is being closely watched as he was present with Zubeen Garg on the yacht during the incident and had already provided his statement to the investigating agency. His testimony before the court could therefore have significance for the subsequent legal proceedings in the case.

The investigating agencies have already recorded statements from several people in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death, while the fast-track court continues to record witness testimonies. The developments following Kalita’s appearance before the court are expected to be closely watched.
