Nepal Tightens Media Rules for Foreign Journalists Covering Bhotekoshi Floods

Nepal has introduced procedures requiring foreign journalists covering the recent Bhotekoshi floods to obtain press passes and submit additional documents before reporting.

According to the Department of Information under Nepal’s Ministry of Information and Communications, foreign correspondents must submit their passport, valid visa, appointment letter or agreement with their media organisation, and recommendation letters from their organisation and the concerned foreign ministry or embassy.

Officials said the procedure is not a new permanent rule but an existing arrangement being continued to streamline media coverage during the disaster.

Foreign journalists already in Nepal without a press pass must obtain one before undertaking reporting. Applications are to be submitted online, after which approved applicants must appear personally at the department to collect their press certificate and journalist identity card.

The department has also said its office will remain open on public holidays to facilitate journalists covering the flood-hit areas.

The Bhotekoshi floods struck early Wednesday, killing people and affecting several areas, prompting international media organisations to send correspondents to Nepal.
