Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigns amid corruption allegations

65

Nepal has witnessed a significant political development after Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on Wednesday, following mounting controversy and allegations of corruption, just 26 days after assuming office.

The resignation is being viewed as a setback for the government led by Prime Minister Balen Shah, as pressure intensified from opposition parties and civil society groups demanding accountability.

Gurung had come under scrutiny over alleged business links with industrialist Deepak Bhatt and purported irregular investments in micro-insurance companies. Investigations reportedly flagged suspicious financial transactions both prior to and during his tenure as minister.

The allegations triggered protests and calls for his immediate resignation. Critics accused him of a conflict of interest and questioned the integrity of his financial dealings.

Ironically, Gurung had, upon taking office, pledged a strong crackdown on corruption and vowed to reform the system. However, as questions mounted over his own conduct, his position became increasingly untenable.

With his public image under strain and political pressure mounting, Gurung stepped down from his post.

Nepal has faced persistent political instability in recent years, and the abrupt exit of a key minister so soon after appointment has raised fresh concerns about the stability of the current administration.
