India opened its medal account at the Asian Para Games with a spectacular one-two finish in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 event in Nagoya on Monday, as Mona Agarwal clinched gold with a Games record and fellow Indian shooter Avani Lekhara took silver.

Mona, who won bronze at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, scored a record 250.0 points to secure the gold medal, finishing just 0.4 points ahead of her compatriot Avani.

Avani, a two-time Paralympic gold medallist, secured silver with a score of 249.6 points.

The closely contested final went down to the wire, with Mona holding a narrow lead of just 0.1 points over Avani before the final shots. Mona had 239.2 points, while Avani stood at 239.1, highlighting the intensity of the competition.

South Korea’s Yunri Lee claimed the bronze medal in the same event.

The SH1 classification is for shooters with lower-limb impairments who can support the weight of their firearm independently or with a shooting stand.

Mona’s record-breaking performance and Avani’s silver medal marked a strong start for India at the Games, underlining the country’s continued achievements in para shooting.
