Mizoram has achieved a major milestone in advanced cardiac care with the successful implantation of the state’s first leadless pacemaker at Aizawl Civil Hospital.
The procedure was performed on Monday by a team of cardiologists led by Dr Loncy V. Lalzarliana and Dr Isak Lallawmkima, under the guidance of Dr Uday Shankar Das of Apollo Multispeciality Hospital, Kolkata.
The achievement comes barely a year after a cardiac catheterisation (Cath) laboratory was installed at the state’s largest civil hospital in 2025, marking another significant advancement in Mizoram’s public healthcare infrastructure.
Unlike conventional pacemakers, the leadless device is implanted directly inside the heart through a catheter inserted via the femoral vein. It eliminates the need for a surgical pocket beneath the skin and leads passing through blood vessels, making the procedure less invasive.
The Abbott AVEIR VR leadless pacemaker used in the procedure is designed to have a battery life of more than 18–21 years, compared with around 9–11 years for many conventional pacemakers.
The 67-year-old patient, a pensioner, received the treatment under the Mizo Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS).
Health Minister Lalrinpuii described the achievement as a significant step towards strengthening cardiac-care services at Civil Hospital Aizawl and bringing advanced heart treatment closer to patients within Mizoram.
The successful procedure marks the first leadless pacemaker implantation in Mizoram, further strengthening the state’s capacity to provide specialised cardiac treatment through its public healthcare system.
