In a major diplomatic development, Japan has strongly reaffirmed its commitment to boosting economic and industrial ties with Assam. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Friday that he held a highly productive telephonic discussion with the Ambassador of Japan to India, H.E. ONO Keiichi.

The high-level conversation firmly underscores that bilateral cooperation between Japan and the northeastern state remains entirely on course under India’s flagship Act East Policy.

Taking to social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his delight over the outreach and highlighted that the dialogue centered on expanding mutual collaboration in futuristic, high-growth industries.

According to the Chief Minister, both sides have mutually agreed to strategically strengthen partnerships across several critical areas:

  • Electronics & Semiconductors: Advancing technology infrastructure and manufacturing capability.
  • Core Infrastructure: Building robust logistics and connectivity hubs within the state.
  • Manufacturing & Entrepreneurship: Scaling industrial output and fostering a vibrant startup ecosystem for local youth.

“In the coming days, Assam looks forward to engage with Japanese enterprises and institutions to enhance both investments and economic opportunities for our people,” Chief Minister Sarma stated.

The renewed pledge from the Japanese Ambassador comes at an important juncture, highlighting Assam’s growing strategic value as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. State officials indicated that Assam is actively preparing a roadmap to engage directly with prominent Japanese corporate enterprises and economic bodies.

The upcoming collaborations are heavily geared toward driving fresh foreign direct investments (FDI) into the region, positioning Assam as a major manufacturing and electronic hub in Northeast India.
