India-China Border Talks: New Push for Early Boundary Settlement

10

India and China have agreed to intensify efforts towards an “Early and Substantial Harvest” in resolving the boundary issue and to take immediate steps to prevent any misunderstanding or miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The understanding was reached during the 25th round of Special Representatives’ talks on the India-China boundary question, held in Beijing on Tuesday. India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi represented the two sides.

As part of measures to strengthen communication and border management, the two countries agreed to establish two additional meeting points for generals and senior military commanders. They will also set up two additional military hotlines in the eastern and middle sectors of the LAC.

According to a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the talks resulted in eight key outcomes and areas of consensus.

The two sides also agreed to convene a meeting of the Expert-Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers in September, indicating continued engagement on water-related issues.

The latest agreements come as India and China seek to maintain peace and stability along the disputed border while advancing discussions aimed at finding a broader resolution to the boundary question.
