Guwahati Metro Hospital Organises Walkathon on World Stroke Day

8

On the occasion of World Stroke Day, Guwahati Metro Hospital organised an awareness walkathon today to raise public awareness about stroke, highlight the importance of recognising its symptoms at an early stage, and emphasise the need for timely medical intervention.

Organised around the theme “Every Minute Counts,” the walkathon aimed to spread awareness about stroke prevention, early identification of warning signs, and the importance of seeking immediate medical attention.

World Stroke Day is observed every year on October 29. A stroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding. Delays in receiving treatment can lead to severe complications and may even prove life-threatening.

The major warning signs of a stroke include sudden drooping of one side of the face, sudden weakness in the arms or legs, and difficulty speaking. Immediate medical attention is essential if any of these symptoms appear. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and smoking are among the major risk factors associated with stroke.

The awareness programme was attended by Dr. Samme Akhtar, Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Shakirul Islam, Dr. Gorki Medhi, MD, along with other representatives of the hospital administration.

Through the walkathon, the hospital sought to encourage people to become more aware of stroke symptoms and seek medical assistance without delay. Since every minute matters in the event of a stroke, timely treatment plays a crucial role in saving lives and improving the chances of recovery.
