YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released at around 3 am on Sunday, hours after being detained ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’s protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, officials said.

According to officials, Rathee was released and handed over to his family in the early hours of Sunday. He had been detained at around 7:30 am on Saturday from his residence in Kendriya Vihar society in Gurugram’s Sector 56.

His detention came ahead of the CJP’s planned demonstration against Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls. The party had called for a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.

The proposed demonstration took place amid heightened security arrangements in the national capital. Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest, citing concerns over public safety, traffic management and law and order.

The detention of Rathee was part of the wider developments surrounding the planned demonstration, which saw a significant police presence and the detention of thousands of people across Delhi, according to reports.

While most of those detained were released by Saturday night, several CJP leaders were reported to remain in custody. Rathee’s release at 3 am marked a further development in the events surrounding the protest.

Officials confirmed that Rathee was handed over to his family following his release. Further details about the circumstances of his detention were not provided in the information available.
