Assam’s Putul Sonowal has created history by assuring India its first-ever medal at the World Bowls Champion of Champions in Barham, Australia. The 43-year-old lawn bowls player secured the historic achievement by advancing to the semi-finals of the men’s singles event.

Sonowal booked his place in the last four after defeating Singapore’s Harriman Yuen in the quarter-finals, marking a significant milestone for Indian lawn bowls on the international stage.

A member of the Assam Police, Sonowal has emerged as one of India’s leading players in the sport. His latest achievement further highlights his growing stature in international lawn bowls and brings recognition to Assam.

Sonowal has enjoyed an impressive run in international competitions. At the 2026 Asian Lawn Bowls Championship, he clinched the gold medal in the men’s singles event, strengthening his position among the leading players in the discipline.

Earlier, at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sonowal registered another notable victory by defeating Canada’s Ryan Bester in the men’s singles event. Bester is a three-time Commonwealth Games medallist and a former world outdoor champion.

The contest between Sonowal and Bester went into a tie-break after both players won one set each. Sonowal eventually prevailed, securing an important victory against the experienced Canadian player.

Sonowal’s progression to the semi-finals of the World Bowls Champion of Champions has now guaranteed India a historic medal at the prestigious competition. His performance is a significant achievement for Indian lawn bowls and a proud moment for Assam.
