Assam Police gets operational freedom to act firmly against drug dealers

Guwahati, July 17 (NKTV): Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today attended a programme to dispose of seized drugs disposal at Police Play Ground in Golaghat today and set the drugs on fire. In the same programme, the Chief Minister also presented cheques to the beneficiaries under Chief Minister’s COVID 19 Widows’ Support Scheme.

It may be noted that in the seized drug disposal programme, 802 gm heroin, 1205 kg ganja, 3
kg opium and 206906 tablets were destroyed. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said, “If we want to make a prosperous Assam, we have to make a free and diseased free Assam. At one point of time, though the state was used as a transit route for drug paddling, subsequently the state has emerged as a point of drug business”. In response to the surging trade of drugs, the Assam Police in its operation against drugs has seized drugs worth Rs. 170 crore in the last two months. Dr. Sarma also said that immediately after coming to power, he directed the Assam Police to act against drug trafficking to make a Drug Free Assam. As a part of the operation, Assam Police already arrested 1493 people indulged in drug business. He also said that Assam Police have been given full freedom to act against the menace of drug trafficking in accordance with the rule of law.

Hailing the Assam Police personnel in their spirited operation against drugs, Dr. Sarma said
that Assam no longer remains a safe passage for the drug traffickers. He also said that the
flames of the drugs consigned would send across a positive message throughout the state for a Drug Free State.

In the same programme, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also presented cheques to the beneficiaries
of Golaghat district who lost their husbands of COVID 19 pandemic. He also said that on 15th
August, during the celebrations of Independence Day, government as per its commitment
would give Rs. 1 lakh to the next of the kin of those who died of COVID.

Deputy Commissioner, Golaghat Mrigesh Nararyan Baruah who gave the welcome speech of
the programme was also addressed by DGP Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta who
reiterated Assam Police’s commitment to make a drug free Assam.

Minister and Guardian Minister of Golaghat Keshab Mahanta, Irrigation Minister Ashok
Singhal, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan, MLA Dibrugarh Prasanta
Phukan, MLA Dergaon Bhabendra Nath Bharali, MLA Sarupathar Biswajit Phukan, DGP
Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare Anurag Goyal and a
host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
