Assam CM calls on Amit Shah; apprises gains made by the state on policing, crime reduction

Assam Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma called on Union Home Minister, Amit Shah at the latter’s residence here on late Tuesday evening and apprised him about the gains made by Assam in policing and drastic reduction in crime.

Briefing the Union Home Minister about the slew of measures taken by the state government on smart policing and bringing down the crime rate considerably, Chief Minister Sarma sought his counsel on taking the police reforms to the next level.

Assam has recorded over a 50% fall in crime against women in the last five years, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2022. The NCRB report revealed that the cases of crime against women hovered over 26,000 every year from 2018 till 2021 and came down to just over 14,000 last year. Even the rate of crime against women, which continued to be over 150% from 2018 to 2021, has fallen to double digits.
As per the report, the number of rape cases came down to over 1,100 in 2022 from 1,600 every year in the 2018-2021 period. Similarly, there has been a dip in cases of assault on women and sexual harassment.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his wishes to the Union Home Minister in person following the historic verdict by the Supreme Court on abrogation of Article 370, saying that ‘his (Shah”s) iron determination was integral to the entire process being carried out successfully under the leadership of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’.

Later taking to X, formerly Twitter, Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “Yesterday – a day after the historic verdict on Article 370, I was honoured to call upon the Hon’ble Union Home Minister and convey my wishes in person.

His iron determination was integral to the entire process being carried out successfully under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji.
I also briefed him on the gains Assam has made in policing and crime reduction & sought his counsel on the next phase of police reforms.”
The meeting with the Union Minister lasted for more than two hours.
