African Swine Fever-Like Disease Triggers Panic in Dibrugarh’s Khowang, Hundreds of Pigs Reportedly Dying Daily

8

An African Swine Fever-like disease has triggered panic among pig farmers in Khowang, Dibrugarh district, with reports of hundreds of pigs dying abnormally every day across several locations.

Unusual pig deaths have been reported from Lezai, Kotoha, Bokahola, Baghtoli-Bahoni and other areas of the district. The disease has also reportedly spread to several villages, including Nahoroni and Saruwasik.

According to reports, infected pigs stop eating for two to three days before succumbing to the illness. The unexplained deaths have left pig farmers distressed and uncertain about how to protect their livestock.

The Dibrugarh district administration and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department have already visited various markets to collect blood samples for laboratory testing.

Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner has stated that a ban on pig sales will be imposed if laboratory tests confirm the presence of African Swine Fever.

Meanwhile, concerns have emerged over reports that meat from potentially infected pigs continues to be sold openly in local markets. This has raised fears of further transmission of the disease among pig populations.

The exact cause of the deaths is yet to be confirmed by laboratory tests.
