Illegal Mining Continues in the Kolong River at Namgaon, Raha; Locals Slam Forest Department for Alleged Inaction
Illegal excavation of sand and soil continues unabated in the Kolong River at Namgaon in Raha, Nagaon district. Allegedly, a section of land mafias has been carrying out large-scale excavation along the riverbed and its banks using JCB machines, both day and night. Local residents have expressed strong resentment over the alleged failure of the Nagaon Forest Department to take action against the illegal activities.
The illegal mining activities have reportedly been continuing for a long time in Namgaon, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Dharamtul Range Forest Officer’s office. At a time when the government claims to be taking stringent measures to protect forests and rivers, such activities have raised serious concerns over the future of the Kolong River.
According to local residents, the matter has already been brought to the attention of the Dharamtul Range Forest Officer. However, they allege that no effective action has been taken so far. This has raised questions over the role of the Forest Department and triggered widespread resentment among concerned citizens.
Residents have also alleged a possible nexus between a section of forest officials and the people involved in illegal mining. However, these allegations are yet to be officially established.
Meanwhile, the continued excavation is reportedly increasing the risk of riverbank erosion and threatening the natural course and ecological balance of the Kolong River. There are also growing concerns that nearby villages could face serious consequences if the activities continue unchecked.
In view of the situation, local residents and various organisations have urged the Forest Department and district administration to immediately stop the alleged illegal mining, conduct an impartial investigation and take strict action against those responsible.
