Trump’s Republican Party Crushed in Midterm Elections as Democrats Capture Both Houses of Congress

25

President Donald Trump’s appeals, warnings and extensive election campaign failed to save the Republican Party from a major defeat. In the 2026 midterm elections, Trump’s Republican Party suffered a crushing setback, with the opposition Democratic Party securing control of both chambers of the US Congress—the Senate and the House of Representatives. The election results have reshaped the political balance of power in the United States and created fresh challenges for the Trump administration.

Ahead of the elections, Trump had warned voters that America would become like France if the Democratic Party came to power. Meanwhile, Trump supporters, including Elon Musk, launched extensive campaign efforts. However, neither the warnings nor the massive campaign could win over voters. Instead, public dissatisfaction over rising prices, the Iran war, tariff policies and various government decisions was reflected in the election results.

Of the 100 seats in the US Senate, elections were held for 35 seats this time. Before the elections, Republicans controlled 53 seats, while Democrats held 47.

In this election, Democrats managed to wrest several seats from the Republicans and secure a majority in the Senate.

According to the reported election figures, the number of Democratic seats has increased to 54, while Republican strength has declined considerably. This will give Democrats greater influence over legislation and important government decisions in the Senate.

Democrats also registered a significant victory in the 435-member House of Representatives. Crossing the magic number of 218 required for a majority, Democrats are heading towards securing 252 seats. Meanwhile, the number of Republican seats has fallen substantially.

The outcome has paved the way for Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to become Speaker of the House of Representatives. Democratic victories in several traditionally Republican strongholds have further underscored the significance of the election results.

Losing control of both chambers of Congress means that the next two years could be particularly difficult for President Trump. Although the President retains executive powers, cooperation from Congress is crucial for passing new laws, approving government funding and making budget-related decisions.

The Democratic-controlled Congress can now launch investigations into various policies and decisions of the Trump administration. Parliamentary hearings and investigations into the Iran war, tariff policies, government expenditure and other administrative actions are also likely to increase.

Furthermore, Trump may find it difficult to move forward with new legislation without Democratic support. The opposition has also gained the political opportunity to initiate impeachment proceedings against the President. However, initiating impeachment proceedings and removing a President from office are two separate processes.

Meanwhile, although Trump has claimed that the election results will not affect his ability to govern, implementing several of his key policies could become increasingly difficult without congressional cooperation.

The political shift in the United States also carries considerable significance for India. Congress plays an important role in shaping India-US relations, trade agreements, import tariffs, defence cooperation and strategic partnerships.

In particular, the stance of the Democratic-controlled Congress towards Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and future trade arrangements could affect India’s exports and commercial interests. However, it would be premature to conclude that US policy towards India will undergo a complete transformation.

The new political equation could also have implications for defence, technology, energy and strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Therefore, maintaining diplomatic engagement and coordination not only with the White House but also with the Democratic controlled Congress will become increasingly important for India.

Even if Trump does not fully accept responsibility for the Republican defeat, ignoring the political reality will not be easy for him. The transfer of control of both chambers of Congress to the opposition will create a stronger system of legislative oversight and political checks on his administration.

Overall, the 2026 midterm elections have ushered in a new chapter in American politics. The results have raised serious questions about Trump’s personal popularity, his policies and the political future of the Republican Party.

The key question now is: Will Trump be able to navigate the remainder of his presidency by working with a Democratic-controlled Congress, or will American politics enter a period of even greater confrontation?
