SSB Personnel Accused of Physically and Mentally Torturing Elderly Parents in Biswanath

A shocking incident has come to light in Baharabhati village of Garhpal, Chatiya, in Assam’s Biswanath district, where an SSB personnel has been accused of physically and mentally torturing his elderly parents.

The accused has been identified as Kiran Chhetri, who is currently posted in Tezpur. According to family members, the alleged abuse began after he returned home during the Durga Puja holidays and continued for the past 10–15 days.

The complainants alleged that Kiran assaulted his 85-year-old father, Hari Bahadur, and 65-year-old mother, Krishna Maya Devi, before forcing them out of their house with only the clothes they were wearing. The elderly couple was subsequently compelled to take shelter at their daughter’s house.

The allegations do not end there. Kiran is also accused of visiting his sister’s house with a sharp weapon and threatening to kill her and her husband for providing shelter to their elderly parents.

According to his mother, Krishna Maya Devi, her son repeatedly subjects the family to similar harassment whenever he returns home on leave. She further alleged that he had sold her gold ornaments, valuable household belongings, and even their domestic cattle and goats. Despite this, he allegedly continued demanding money and torturing his parents.

In another serious allegation, the mother claimed that her son once spat gutkha into her eyes, forcing her to seek medical treatment.

Unable to bear the alleged abuse any longer, Kiran’s wife also reportedly left the house.

Finally, on Saturday, the distressed mother and her daughter approached the Biswanath Chariali Sadar Police Station and lodged a formal complaint against Kiran Chhetri, seeking justice and protection. The mother also handed over a sharp weapon that she alleged was used by her son to threaten and intimidate family members.

The incident has triggered widespread concern in the area, particularly because the accused is serving in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a force entrusted with the country’s security.

Local residents and concerned citizens have demanded a fair investigation into the allegations, strict legal action if the charges are established, and immediate protection for the elderly parents.

However, the accused personnel’s response and further details of the police investigation are yet to be officially known.
