Flood-damaged school rebuilt after 4 years in Barpeta

16

Nearly four years after the devastating floods of 2022 destroyed Kaimari Government Primary School in Assam’s Barpeta district, a newly reconstructed school building has been inaugurated, restoring access to education for around 160 children in the village.

The school was severely damaged and eventually washed away during the floods, disrupting the education of local students. The reconstruction aims to provide children with a safe and conducive environment for learning.

The newly built school features five classrooms, a staff room, a digital learning room, a kitchen and storage facility, separate sanitation facilities for boys, girls and staff, classroom furniture, electricity connectivity and a playground.

The campus also incorporates the Building as Learning Aid (BALA) concept, which uses school infrastructure as an interactive learning resource to encourage creativity and curiosity among students.

The school was reconstructed through a collaboration between Group Legrand India and One Stage Organization. The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, community leaders, teachers, students and representatives of the organisations involved.

The reconstruction is expected to help restore educational continuity for children in the flood-affected village, where access to adequate school infrastructure had been disrupted following the natural disaster.

The initiative also highlights the importance of rebuilding educational infrastructure in flood-prone areas of Assam, where recurring natural disasters often affect children’s access to education.
