12

The arrival of Amur Falcons in Umrangso, located in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, has marked the return of the migratory bird season in the region. Travelling thousands of kilometres from their breeding grounds in Siberia and China towards their wintering destinations in Africa, these small birds of prey make seasonal stopovers, offering a spectacular sight for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Every year, the arrival of Amur Falcons during October and November attracts the attention of birdwatchers, wildlife photographers and visitors eager to witness one of nature’s remarkable migratory journeys. Known as ‘Daopana’ in the Dimasa language and ‘Kalengmaha’ in Karbi, the birds have also become an important part of the region’s natural heritage.

The migration of Amur Falcons is among the remarkable journeys undertaken by birds across continents. During their long journey, they depend on suitable resting areas and food sources to replenish their energy before continuing towards their wintering grounds. Umrangso’s seasonal association with these birds has helped draw attention to the ecological significance of Dima Hasao.

The peak period for spotting the birds generally falls between late October and early November, although their arrival and departure may vary according to weather conditions and migration patterns. The season provides an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to explore the region’s rich biodiversity and appreciate its natural beauty.

The annual arrival of these migratory birds also offers considerable scope for strengthening eco-tourism in Dima Hasao. Birdwatching activities and nature-based tourism could help attract visitors while creating opportunities for local communities. The Amur Falcon Festival, generally organised by the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council around November or December, also seeks to showcase the district’s natural attractions and cultural heritage.

However, the growing interest in these birds also underlines the need for responsible tourism and wildlife protection. Preserving their resting habitats, preventing hunting and minimising human disturbance are essential to ensuring their safe passage during migration.

As Amur Falcons return to Umrangso, their seasonal visit serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Assam’s rich biodiversity. Conservation efforts and community participation will be vital in safeguarding these remarkable migratory visitors and preserving the region’s natural heritage for generations to come.
