Durga Puja Celebrations Begin with Maha Shashti Across Assam
The festive spirit of Durga Puja has swept across Assam as devotees celebrate Maha Shashti, marking the beginning of the main festivities dedicated to Goddess Durga. Puja committees across the state have put the finishing touches on their preparations, with beautifully decorated pandals, colourful lights and elaborate idols adding to the festive atmosphere.
Maha Shashti holds special religious significance as it marks the traditional beginning of Durga Puja rituals. According to Hindu traditions, the ceremonial rites of Bodhan, Amantran and Adhibas are performed on this day to invoke and welcome the Goddess.
The festival commemorates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura and symbolises the triumph of good over evil, truth over injustice and righteousness over wrongdoing.
With the arrival of Shashti, devotees are expected to visit puja pandals in large numbers. Families are preparing to join the celebrations, while markets across the state are witnessing increased activity as people shop for new clothes and festive essentials.
As the celebrations gather momentum, Assam is set to immerse itself in the devotion, cultural traditions and vibrant spirit of Durga Puja in the days ahead.
