Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has raised concerns over classroom teaching methods in the state, stating that 30 per cent of students in Assam fail to understand lessons explained by their teachers, according to a survey by UNESCO.

Pegu made the remarks while attending the central prize distribution ceremony of drawing, quiz and speech competitions organised under the Seva Sankalpa Abhiyan at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium in Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra.

Addressing the gathering, the Education Minister highlighted the need to improve teaching methods in schools to ensure that students can understand classroom lessons more effectively.

Referring to the survey, Pegu said that a significant proportion of students were unable to grasp what teachers explained in the classroom. He pointed out that teachers often direct questions only at students sitting on the front benches, highlighting the need for more inclusive classroom interaction.

He stressed that teachers should explain lessons more clearly and in simpler language so that students can understand the subject matter better.

The minister also spoke about the difficulty many people face in expressing themselves clearly. Sharing his own observations, he said that several people who approach him are unable to communicate their concerns effectively. In this context, he referred to the popular meme phrase “Kehna Kya Chahte Hain”, commonly used to describe unclear or confusing communication.

Pegu’s remarks have brought renewed attention to classroom teaching practices, student comprehension and the importance of effective communication between teachers and students in Assam’s education system.
