Union Minister of State L Murugan resigned from his ministerial position and membership of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, expressing his desire to dedicate himself full-time to strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Murugan submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting to be relieved of his responsibilities with immediate effect. In his letter, he stated that he wanted to return to grassroots politics and focus on expanding and strengthening the BJP’s organisational presence in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement shared on X, Murugan described his tenure under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership as one of the greatest honours of his life.

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji,” he said.

Highlighting his journey from a family of daily-wage labourers to becoming a member of the Union Council of Ministers, Murugan said serving the country under Modi’s leadership had been a tremendous privilege.

He further emphasised his intention to return to grassroots-level political work and dedicate his time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu as the party prepares for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Murugan previously served as the president of the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit and was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. His term in the Upper House was scheduled to continue until 2030. However, through his resignation letter, he sought immediate relief from his parliamentary responsibilities.

His decision marks a shift towards organisational politics in Tamil Nadu, where the BJP has been working to expand its political footprint ahead of the next general elections.
