Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Faster Recruitment and Promotion Processes Over Next Five Years

Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday attended the first appointment letter distribution ceremony of his second term, where appointments were announced across several departments, including Public Health Engineering, Water Resources, and Labour and Welfare.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the recruitment process in Assam had become more transparent and that the pace of recruitment would accelerate over the next five years. He also announced that the process of promotions for eligible employees would be expedited.

Referring to the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank, Sarma said the bank had overcome a period of financial uncertainty and had transformed into a profitable institution. He added that the bank had also achieved the status of a scheduled bank.

The Chief Minister said 12 doctors had been appointed for ESIC hospitals. He also highlighted the recruitment record of the Public Health Engineering Department, stating that 1,173 appointments had been made during the previous term. He added that the pace of recruitment of engineers would be accelerated during the current term.

Emphasising transparency, Sarma said appointment ceremonies of this nature had not been held in the past because recruitment advertisements themselves often became subjects of controversy. He claimed that the state had established an environment of trust and confidence in the recruitment process.

He further asserted that no minister’s or bureaucrat’s close associate had received appointments in the latest recruitment drive, adding that he himself was unaware of the identities of those selected. He also said the latest appointments had not triggered controversy in the media.

Referring to the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), Sarma said people had long demanded transparent recruitment examinations. However, he expressed concern over cases in which officers recruited through the commission had subsequently been caught allegedly accepting bribes.

The Chief Minister also referred to the practice of treating government jobs as a marketable commodity in the past. He warned that corruption could erode a person’s values after entering government service, stressing the need to maintain integrity and oppose wrongdoing even after securing a job.

His remarks served as a warning to government employees against corruption on the day the state welcomed a new group of recruits.Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday attended the first appointment letter distribution ceremony of his second term, where appointments were announced across several departments, including Public Health Engineering, Water Resources, and Labour and Welfare.
