Gauhati High Court grants bail on a ₹50,000 bond; release awaits completion of legal formalities

Following the Gauhati High Court’s decision to grant bail to Amritprabha Mahanta, an accused in the Zubeen Garg death case, her lawyer has issued a statement defending her and questioning aspects of the chargesheet.

The lawyer said that detailed arguments were presented before the court on Amritprabha’s behalf, supported by documentary and digital evidence. The lawyer also questioned the legal validity of certain material included in the chargesheet.

According to the lawyer, the court granted Amritprabha bail on a bond of ₹50,000. She is expected to be released after her family arranges the required amount and submits the necessary bail documents before the lower court.

Arguing in favour of her innocence, the lawyer described Amritprabha as a singer and dancer who had represented the country on several occasions. The lawyer also pointed out that she had no previous criminal cases.

“What wrong did Amritprabha Mahanta commit? She went to the event because she was invited. She addressed Zubeen Garg as ‘Dada’ and considered him a father figure,” the lawyer said.

The lawyer further claimed that Amritprabha had spent nearly a year in jail despite maintaining her innocence, adding that her family had also endured considerable hardship during this period.

Amritprabha’s release, however, remains subject to the completion of the prescribed bail formalities before the lower court.
