No relief yet for Shyamkanu Mahanta, SC hearing deferred

17

The Supreme Court on Monday heard the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta, an accused in the case related to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, but no final decision was taken.

The hearing before the country’s top court has now been deferred, with the matter scheduled to come up again in the first week of November.

Mahanta had approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application. The Supreme Court had earlier kept his plea pending and directed the Assam prosecution to proceed with the trial diligently and without unnecessary delay.

Mahanta has been in custody since his arrest in October 2025 in connection with the case. He is among the accused facing charges in the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death.

During the previous hearing, the Assam government informed the court that the trial was progressing on a day-to-day basis. The State had also indicated that key witnesses, including those based in Singapore, would be examined.

The Supreme Court had subsequently listed the matter for October 5. Following Monday’s hearing, Mahanta’s bail plea remains pending, with the next hearing now expected in the first week of November.

The development is being closely watched in Assam, where the case has generated widespread public interest.
