Mukesh Kumar joins Akash Deep in race for New Zealand tests

7

Mukesh Kumar has emerged as a strong contender for India’s upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand following an impressive performance in the Irani Cup.

The Bengal pacer, along with fellow Bengal seamer Akash Deep, is now among the leading candidates for a place in India’s red-ball squad for the New Zealand tour.

The Indian team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, is understood to be keen on Akash Deep’s inclusion, while Mukesh’s recent performances have also reportedly caught the management’s attention.

Both pacers played key roles in Rest of India’s remarkable 167-run comeback victory over Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir in the Irani Cup in Srinagar on Sunday.

Akash Deep finished the match with six wickets, while Mukesh Kumar produced an eight-wicket haul to make a strong case for himself.

Mukesh, 32, has represented India in three Tests, six ODIs and 17 T20Is since making his international debut in July 2023. His recent red-ball form could now earn him another opportunity at the highest level.

Alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Gurnoor Brar, Mukesh and Akash are expected to be considered for the 16- or 17-member squad for the two-Test series.

The New Zealand Tests will form part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, making the selection particularly important for India.
