India’s Wholesale Inflation Rises to 9.92% in August

India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) increased to 9.92% in August 2026, up from 9.78% in July, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry on Monday.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities rose to 110.8 in August, compared with 110.0 in July. The increase was mainly driven by higher prices of fuel and power, manufactured products and food items.

Inflation in fuel and power rose sharply to 22.93%, from 20.05% in July. Within this group, mineral oil inflation jumped to 38.48%, compared with 32.40% in July, while crude petroleum and natural gas inflation increased to 34.41% from 26.99%.

Food inflation also increased, with the WPI Food Index rising to 7.05% in August from 6.65% in July. Inflation in food articles stood at 5.67%, while manufactured food products recorded 9.65% inflation.

Inflation in manufactured products edged up to 8.37% from 8.29%. Chemical and chemical products recorded inflation of 14.30%, while rubber and plastic products rose to 11.18%. However, basic metals inflation eased to 10.88% from 12.56%.

Meanwhile, inflation in primary articles declined to 7.76% from 8.52% in July.

The ministry also revised June WPI inflation to 9.97%, from the earlier provisional estimate of 9.87%. The provisional WPI data for September 2026 is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2026.
