Trump claims US has ‘Control’ over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has sharply escalated his rhetoric against Iran, warning that Tehran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon and suggesting that Washington is in no hurry to reach a new agreement with the Iranian government.

Speaking at a rally in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Friday, Trump said the United States could not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and warned of serious consequences if Tehran succeeded in doing so.

“We cannot let them have a nuclear weapon; we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon, or you will see some very bad things,” Trump said.

Trump also claimed that the United States had already taken action to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“We went down, and we stopped them; they will never have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

The US president further suggested that Washington was not under pressure to reach an agreement with Tehran, despite claiming that Iran was eager to strike a deal.

Trump then turned his attention to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. He made an extraordinary claim that the key waterway was effectively under American control.

His comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme remaining a major point of contention.

Trump’s latest remarks signal a continued hardline approach towards Iran, while his comments on the Strait of Hormuz could further raise concerns over regional security and global energy supplies.
