Assam-Meghalaya Tensions: Meghalaya Delegation to Meet Atul Bora

19

A delegation from Meghalaya is set to meet Assam’s Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora in Guwahati today amid continuing tensions following attacks on Assam-registered vehicles and tourists during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) protest in Shillong earlier this week.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at the State Guest House in Koinadhora. Representatives of the Meghalaya government are expected to discuss measures to de-escalate the situation and find an amicable resolution to the ongoing tensions.

The developments come in the aftermath of a violent incident during a KSU black-flag protest in Shillong on August 19. Masked miscreants allegedly targeted vehicles carrying tourists from Assam, vandalising several vehicles and damaging their windows and windscreens. Some tourists were also reportedly injured in the incident.

The Shillong incident subsequently triggered protests at Jorabat, a key entry point between Assam and Meghalaya. Meghalaya-registered vehicles were stopped and forced to return, while protesters demanded compensation for the damage caused to Assam vehicles and an apology over the incident.

Police and reserve personnel were deployed at Jorabat to prevent any escalation and maintain law and order. Meanwhile, three senior KSU office-bearers were arrested in connection with the Shillong incident.

Against this backdrop, today’s meeting between the Meghalaya delegation and Minister Atul Bora assumes significance, with both sides expected to explore ways to restore normalcy and prevent further incidents along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Minister Atul Bora has appealed for calm, urging people on both sides not to allow isolated incidents to undermine the long-standing ties between Assam and Meghalaya.
