Indian, US Navies join hands for EOD exercise in Kochi

The Indian Navy and the United States Navy have begun a specialised Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) exercise at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi. The five-day bilateral exercise will be held from August 10 to 14, 2026, with a focus on improving operational interoperability and strengthening cooperation between the two navies.

The exercise brings together specialist diving and EOD teams from the Indian and US navies. According to the Ministry of Defence, the training programme includes Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, cross-training, equipment demonstrations and scenario-based practical exercises.

The participating teams will exchange expertise on contemporary EOD techniques, emerging technologies and operational best practices. The exercise is also aimed at giving personnel from both sides a better understanding of each other’s capabilities, operational concepts and procedures.

The training is expected to enhance the ability of the two navies to respond to complex and evolving explosive threats in the maritime environment. It will also promote collaborative learning and greater operational synergy between the specialist teams.

The India-US engagement in this field has a long history. The two navies have been conducting joint Salvage and EOD exercises since 2005. The 2026 exercise marks the eighth edition of this specialised bilateral training programme.

The latest exercise comes as both countries continue to deepen defence and maritime cooperation, with the specialised training providing an opportunity to strengthen professional expertise and interoperability in maritime operations.

The Ministry of Defence said the exercise reflects the enduring commitment of the Indian Navy and US Navy to sharing operational expertise, strengthening interoperability and enhancing cooperation in specialised maritime operations.
