Veteran filmmaker Shakeel Noorani, 73, has been arrested in connection with allegations of rape and sexual assault made by a 33-year-old actress in Mumbai.
According to the police complaint, the actress was allegedly called to Noorani’s residence in Malwani on the pretext of discussing an upcoming film. She has alleged that Noorani drugged and sexually assaulted her and subsequently threatened her.
Recent reports indicate that the police had been searching for Noorani for around 40 days before tracing him to a farmhouse in Maharashtra’s Satara district, near Mahabaleshwar. He was subsequently arrested by the Malvani Police.
The case reportedly involves allegations of repeated sexual assault, blackmail and threats. Police are investigating the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the complaint.
Noorani was produced before the Borivali Holiday Court, which remanded him to police custody until August 12.
Noorani’s lawyer has denied the allegations against the filmmaker. The charges remain allegations at this stage, and the investigation is ongoing.
Shakeel Noorani has worked as a writer, producer and director in the Hindi film industry. He is known for films including Bade Dil Wala (1999) and Joru Ka Ghulam (2000). His filmography also includes Shreeman Ashique and Acid of Love.
The filmmaker had also previously been involved in a legal dispute with actor Sanjay Dutt over the film Jaan Ki Baazi, a matter that reached the Bombay High Court.
