Landslides Trigger Panic in Guwahati; Multiple Incidents Reported Amid Heavy Rain

27

Heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides across Guwahati, causing widespread concern among residents.

In the Panjabari area, a major landslide occurred at Batahghuli, where a portion of the retaining wall (guard wall) collapsed near Rangatila, triggering panic among locals.

Other areas affected by landslides include the Nilachal Hills and the newly constructed Pandu-Kamakhya road. Large boulders and loose soil have fallen onto the road at several points. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

This is the second major landslide incident in the city within a short period due to continuous rainfall.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Meghalaya, a severe landslide occurred on the Shillong-Dawki highway around 5 PM on Monday. A pickup vehicle was completely destroyed in the landslide. Rescue teams have reached the spot and are conducting search operations. The driver of the vehicle is still missing.

The continuous rain has not only caused artificial flooding in several parts of Guwahati but has also led to increased landslide risks in hilly and low-lying areas.

Authorities have been urged to take immediate preventive measures to ensure public safety.
