AIIMS Becomes First Govt Medical College in India to Train on da Vinci Robotic System

14

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi has inaugurated the advanced da Vinci Surgical Robot at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine (SET) Facility, marking a significant milestone in robotic surgery training in India. This is the first installation of the da Vinci system for training at a government medical college in the country. The new robotic platform, provided by Intuitive Surgical under a memorandum of understanding, makes AIIMS Delhi the only institution in India with two robotic systems dedicated solely to training. The facility already houses a Hugo robotic trainer by Medtronic, offering comprehensive, hands-on robotic surgery training for students, residents, nurses, and faculty.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, said the new centre boosts the institute’s role in surgical innovation, bringing robotic surgery training to India that was once only available abroad. The SET facility provides access to simulators, trainers, and manikins, allowing trainees to practice in a safe, supervised environment. The new robot will enhance skill development across specialities, including urology, gynaecology, general surgery, surgical oncology, and head and neck surgery.
