A total of 18 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in two separate operations by the Border Branch of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate on October 6 and 7.

In the first operation, five Bangladeshi nationals—four women and one man—were apprehended from General Coach No. 1 of the Lokamanya Tilak Terminal Express (Train No. 15648) at Guwahati Railway Station around 2:30 PM on October 6. The train was scheduled to depart for Lokamanya Tilak Terminal in Maharashtra at 3 PM.

Police recovered three Aadhaar cards from their possession, of which one was found to be genuine. During preliminary questioning, the group reportedly admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals and stated that they had entered India illegally through the Meghalaya border without valid travel or identity documents. They were allegedly travelling to Mumbai in search of employment.

The five individuals reportedly belong to Dhaka, Bogura, Rajbari, Narail and Jamalpur districts of Bangladesh.

Police also found that the group had stayed at Vintage Home in Tokobari. A case has been registered at Panbazar Police Station against the hotel owner and other staff for allegedly harbouring and facilitating the illegal immigrants. Four persons, including hotel owner Amit Roy Basumatary, Hajrat Ali, Vishal Paul and Ranjan Dhar, have already been arrested in connection with the case.

In a separate operation, the Border Branch conducted a raid at Shanti Hotel around 2:30 PM and apprehended 13 Bangladeshi nationals, comprising four men, four women and five children.

According to police, the group had arrived in Guwahati from Delhi earlier that morning and intended to return to Bangladesh. During interrogation, they reportedly stated that they had been staying illegally in India for the past 14–15 years near Pantha Chowk in Srinagar. They allegedly fled Srinagar following a crackdown by the Srinagar Police against illegally residing Bangladeshi nationals and travelled to Guwahati to return to Bangladesh.

Further necessary legal action is being initiated for their expulsion from India in accordance with the provisions of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, the Assam Police said.
