Upper Assam floods: Essential relief reaches thousands of affected families
Following the recent floods across three districts of Upper Assam, the Northeast Centre for Equity Action on Integrated Development (NEAID) has provided emergency relief to more than 4,500 families across 48 villages in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo. The organisation has also extended support to seven flood-affected schools through its Back-to-School Campaign. NEAID began its emergency relief efforts on July 24, 2026, distributing dry ration kits to 3,570 families and WASH kits to 4,537 families. It also provided 968 mattresses and 300 solar lamps and torches to families in need.
NEAID will conclude the first phase of its relief efforts on August 29, 2026, by distributing essential household and WASH items—including mattresses, water filters, kitchen utensils and WASH kits to 820 households across five villages in Sivasagar and Charaideo.
As part of its “Back-to-School Campaign,” launched in partnership with the District Education Department in Sivasagar, NEAID has distributed 1,330 school bags and stationery kits, with a target of reaching 2,000 students. WASH kits have also been provided to schools to help create safer conditions for children returning to the classroom. NEAID also plans to support minor repairs to flood-damaged school infrastructure and provide recreational materials for children.
Beyond emergency relief, NEAID has supported joint field assessments and is a member of the Inter-Agency Group (IAG) for disaster response. In collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit and Railway Police, NEAID is planning child vulnerability mapping and anti-trafficking awareness activities in high-risk and flood-affected areas.
As part of its year-long “Rebuild” initiative, NEAID will now focus on helping families recover from the impact of the floods. The rehabilitation phase will include support with essential household items, home and school repairs, livelihood recovery, afforestation, community-based environmental restoration and continued psychosocial support for children and adolescents. The initiative will also work to strengthen community-based child protection systems and build more resilient communities in flood-affected areas.
