In a swift and decisive operation, Nagaon Police shot dead Khairul Ali alias Moni, the prime accused in the sensational Morikolong dacoity case, during an encounter at Borkandali area under Mikirpara on Thursday afternoon.

Khairul, a dreaded criminal involved in multiple cases of dacoity and cattle theft across Assam, opened fire on a police team during the operation. In retaliation, police fired back, critically injuring him. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Nagaon Medical College Hospital.

A 7.65mm pistol and several empty cartridges were recovered from the spot. Police sources said one police vehicle was also hit by bullets during the exchange of fire. Locals reported hearing gunshots around 2 PM.

Khairul was the mastermind behind the dacoity at Dr. Ranjit Saikia’s residence in Morikolong, in which the doctor’s wife, Rashmirekha Saikia, was killed. He was also allegedly involved in at least 8 other theft and dacoity cases in Nagaon, along with two major theft cases in Lakhimpur and Bihpuria.

According to police, Khairul had been hiding in the Mikirpara area for some time and was planning further criminal activities. He had been staying at Star Hotel in Nagaon for nearly a month. His second wife, Parbin, is also suspected to have assisted him in his criminal operations.

Two linkmen — Harish Sharma and Satish Shah — frequently visited him at the hotel. Police have seized the hotel’s register for further investigation.

This encounter is being seen as a major success for Nagaon Police in curbing organised crime in the district. Further investigation into the entire gang is underway.
