India to Send High-Level Delegation to Iran for Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s Funeral

Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt. General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain will travel to Iran on July 3 to attend the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India’s high-level presence at the funeral reflects the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.

“The high-level representation in the ceremony underscores the importance of civilizational ties, including people-to-people connection, between the two countries, providing a robust foundation to political and economic engagements,” the MEA stated.

Context of the Escalating Regional Conflict

Khamenei, who led Iran for 36 years and was a staunch opponent of Washington, was killed on February 28. His death coincided with the commencement of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran, a move that has triggered a major regional conflict across the Gulf.

Funeral Schedule and Itinerary

The funeral proceedings are scheduled to span several days and cross international borders:

  • July 4: Processions begin in the capital city of Tehran.
  • Interim Dates: Additional memorial ceremonies will be held in Qom, Iran, as well as in neighboring Iraq.
  • July 9: The ceremonies will conclude with Khamenei’s burial in his hometown of Mashhad.

Heightened Security and Airspace Restrictions

In anticipation of the massive gatherings, Iranian media reports indicate that security measures have been significantly tightened across the country. Additionally, the head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation announced on Wednesday that temporary airspace restrictions will be enforced over multiple cities, including Tehran and Mashhad, throughout the funeral period.
