Lachit’s Statue to Instil Patriotism Among Upcoming Generations in the State: CM Dr.Sarma

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unveiled the 125-feet tall statue of medieval era Ahom Military Commander Lachit Barphukan that has been installed near the latter’s maidam, or the burial tomb, at Hollongapar in Jorhat district of the State. Named “The Statue of Valour”, the statue is part of the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project that also includes a museum, a 500-seating capacity auditorium and a hostel. Apart from contributing towards tourism potential of the area, the 125-feet tall statue of the great Ahom Military Commander is also expected to inspire newer generation with the patriotism and love for their motherland.

The Prime Minister thereafter proceeded to Meleng Meteli in the district to address a public meeting from where he inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid foundation stones of projects worth a total of Rs. 17,606 crores. Some of the major projects he inaugurated were “griha pravesh” of the 5,55,555 numbers of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY)-G houses built at a cost of Rs. 8,500 crores, the Tinsukia Medical College & Hospital that was constructed at a cost of Rs. 620 crores, the Rs. 4,000-crore Barauni-Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline under PM Urja Ganga Project, the Rs. 600-crore pumping capacity enhancement of Barauni – Bongaigaon – Guwahati sector of Naharkatiya – Barauni Crude Oil Pipeline, the Rs. 50-crore replacement of crude oil spur line from PS-1 Duliajan to Digboi Refinery, the Rs. 810-crore doubling of Dhupdhara – Chhaygaon section under New Bongaigaon – Goalpara – Kamakhya doubling project, the Rs. 520-crore doubling of New Bongaigaon – Sorbhog section under New Bongaigaon – Rangiya – Agthori doubling project. The projects for which foundation stones were laid by the Prime Minister were the Rs. 500-crore Sivasagar Medical College and Hospital, the Rs. 300-crore Haemato-Lymphoid and Padeatric Oncology Centre at Dr. B. Barooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, the Rs. 800-crore capacity expansion of Digboi Refinery from 0.65 to 1 MMTPA, the Rs. 500-crore Guwahati Refinery Expansion from 1.0 to 1.2 MMTPA along with installation of CRU, the Rs. 300-crore revamping/augmentation of facilities at Betkcuhi (Guwahati) Terminal of IOCL.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma termed this visit of the Prime Minister a milestone and a historic one for the State. The Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the State more than 16 times in total since 2014, when he assumed the responsibility of his current office. Extending a warm welcome to the Prime Minister to the State and extending his gratitude for his never-ending support, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said no other Prime Minister had visited Kaziranga National Park, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, after 1957. He said the people of Assam are happy to host the Prime Minister at Kaziranga National Park where he spent last night. The unveiling of the 125-feet statue of Ahom military commander Lachit Barphukan shall contribute greatly towards instilling a sense of patriotism among the upcoming generations of the State, the Chief Minister added.

He said as many as 5,55,555 families from across the State receiving possession of houses built under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY-G) in a single day is a historic moment. Stating that once upon a time there used to be grievances among the people of the over Assam crude oil being refined at Barauni, the Chief Minister said those grievances will be mitigated now as the Barauni – Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline becomes operational. He expressed his deep gratitude towards the Prime Minister for the latter’s role in ushering in a new era of growth and development in the State.

The event was also attended by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameswar Teli, Ministers of Assam Cabinet Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, UG Brahma, along with a host of dignitaries.
