A five-year-old boy narrowly escaped death after an iron rod pierced his mouth while he was playing near his home in Ved village of Sami taluka in Gujarat’s Patan district. A team of doctors successfully removed the rod during a complex operation lasting nearly 40 minutes.
The incident occurred when the child lost his footing and fell to the ground while playing outdoors. An exposed iron rod pierced his mouth, causing severe bleeding and leaving him seriously injured.
Alarmed by the severity of the injury, his parents immediately contacted the 108 emergency service, following which the child was rushed to Radhanpur Government Hospital for treatment.
Upon examination, doctors found that the iron rod had penetrated deep into the area near the child’s teeth and jaw. Given the delicate position of the rod, removing it without damaging the surrounding tissues required specialised medical care.
The hospital’s medical team sought the assistance of a private dental surgeon, and an emergency surgical team was assembled. After nearly 40 minutes of careful work, the doctors successfully removed the metal rod without causing damage to the boy’s jaw or surrounding tissues.
The successful procedure relieved the child’s severe pain and helped save his life.
Following the operation, dentist Dr DS Sodha urged parents to closely supervise young children while they play in open spaces and residential areas to prevent such dangerous accidents.
The prompt response of the 108 emergency service, along with the timely intervention of doctors at Radhanpur Government Hospital and the private dental surgeon, proved crucial in saving the young boy’s life.
