India Approves 18-Hour Daily Power Export to Nepal
India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for up to 18 hours a day from September 13, 2026, amid a power supply crisis in the neighbouring country.
According to a notice from India’s Ministry of Power, up to 600 MW of electricity can be exported through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV transmission line, while up to 54 MW can be supplied through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV transmission line. The approval will remain valid until December 31, 2026.
Nepal has been facing power supply disruptions following the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli flash flood on August 26. Official data shows that seven operating hydropower projects and five solar plants were damaged, disrupting around 275 MW of power supply.
The Indian side said the approval will help Nepal meet its electricity requirements during this difficult period. It is also expected to further strengthen the longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal.
India has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
